FedEx launches eco-driving programme in Asia

FedEx Express

FedEx Express has launched an “eco-drive” campaign in 10 Asia-Pacific countries to improve fuelefficiency by changing the daily driving habits of hundreds of FedEx drivers.

The efficient driving programme will be run in Australia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea,Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand.

Started in Japan, Eco-drive teaches FedEx drivers how to operate in a more environmentallyfriendly way through both classroom and practical sessions. Taught by experts from Isuzu, thebenefits of the Eco-drive programme include fuel efficiency leading to cost savings, loweremissions leading to a cleaner environment, and vehicle accident prevention leading to saferroads.

The techniques and tips learned during the sessions can be applied on the job and outside ofwork. Hundreds of FedEx Asia-Pacific drivers will increase their awareness of the importance ofenergy conservation, environmental protection and general road safety.

“The Eco-drive programme demonstrates that it’s not just where and what FedEx team members aredriving that can make a big difference in reducing fuel use, but also how they are driving,” saidDavid L. Cunningham Jr., president of FedEx Express, Asia Pacific. “The Eco-drive programaddresses the ‘how’ by offering practical tips that anyone can use in order to drive in anenvironmentally friendly way. Eco-drive is just one more example of our commitment to environmentalsustainability and community programmes in Asia Pacific.”

Along with the Eco-drive programme, FedEx said its commitment to environmental sustainabilityincludes shifting to more efficient vehicles and aircraft through increased investment inall-electric and alternative drive train vehicles and adding 777F aircraft to its fleet.

This fiscal year, FedEx Express is adding almost 4,000 vehicles that are at least 100% more fuelefficient than the most commonly found alternatives they replace. By the end of May 2011, thecompany increased its all-electric and hybrid-electric vehicle fleet by 20%, with more than 400vehicles in service across the globe. As a result, FedEx has made major progress in itscommitment to improve fuel efficiency by 20% by the end of 2020. Since 2005, FedEx has reduced fuelconsumption by 15.1%.
