DPD has expanded its capacity in Estonia with the opening of a new €2 million logistics centrethat will enable it to speed up handling.

The European parcels operator said the new centre at the Rae Industrial Park on the outskirts ofthe capital Tallinn features sorting equipment that is “more up-to-date and powerful than anyfacilities operated by similar service providers in Estonia”.

Construction of the €2 million distribution centre, which was designed and constructed byAstlanda Ehitus OÜ, began in the spring of 2011. The new terminal has 2,039 sqm of handling spacewith an additional 822 sqm of office space. The parcel sorting technology in the distributioncentre is also new.

“If we speed up the handling of parcels during the delivery process by just a single second, itmeans a time saving of more than 555 hours annually. This is definitely of great value both to ourcustomers and to us, because time is money for everybody,” said DPD Eesti Managing Director TarmoTael when he presented the capabilities of the new hub.

Rainer Rohtla, Manager of Development Projects at DPD Eesti AS, stated: “In our previousterminal the parcel sorting capacity was 2,000 to 2,400 parcels per hour, depending on the natureof the parcels. In the new Taevavärava terminal this will be approximately one and a half to twotimes faster, which means we should be able to sort 4,500 parcels per hour.”

According to Rohtla, the capability for handling pallets will also increase significantly in thenew building. “In making the investment we considered the specifics of the local market. It isimportant for us that the facilities we use should provide the best possible benefits to ourcustomers and the owners,” he stated, adding that the new terminal will provide the company withthe opportunity to virtually double its parcel volumes over the next five years.

In addition the new facility provides better working and living conditions for the employeesand, according to the managing director, customers will also benefit. DPD Eesti handles more thantwo million parcel deliveries a year.
