British parcels carrier City Link has opened a flagship, new purpose-built facility in Bournemouthto serve the surrounding region of southern England.
Construction work on the 36,000 sq ft (3,345 sqm) facility started early this year. The newsite, at Aviation Business Park within Bournemouth International Airport, sits within a mile of thecompany’s previous depot – a former hangar, also situated on the business park.
City Link has signed a 15 year lease with commercial property business MAG Developments forthe site which is kitted out with state-of-the-art IT systems as part of a multi-million poundinvestment.
The new depot, with a workforce of almost 100, serves 240 customers across the nearby townsof Bournemouth, Salisbury, Weymouth, Lyme Regis and New Milton, handling 25,000 deliveries and18,000 collections every week.
Steve Jones, General Manager of City Link’s Bournemouth depot, said the new property wasroughly the same size as the former depot. But as the demands of City Link’s modern-day businessand consumer customers had changed, the company had outgrown the previous site.
“The previous building served a useful purpose over an eight-year period but in those eightyears our customer base and the expectations of our customers have seen a dramatic change. Also, aswell as Bournemouth we are now serving customers in Salisbury. With these extra demands this new,purpose-built facility was overdue,” he said.
“We are delighted to see the new facility open and fully operational. It will allow us tomeet the requirements of all our customers far more efficiently with value added service for theirbenefit.”
