GLS Germany has followed the trend towards CO2-neutral parcel services with the introduction of‘green parcels’ that compensate for their environmental footprint.
The European parcels carrier said its new ‘Think Green’ service offered CO2-neutral shippingwithin Germany and to European destinations in response to increasing customer demand for such aservice.
GLS will add a surcharge of five cents for domestic parcels and 10 cents for Europeanparcels, and will use the money to finance externally certified reforestation projects.
GLS said it has calculated the average CO2 emissions per parcel based on its currentenvironmental statement and in line with the ISO 14064-1 norm and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.Shippers using the service can use the ‘Think Green’ logo on their websites and link to the GLSinitiative, and also add a label to their shipments to make them clearly visible as ‘green parcels’.
“With the Think Green service our customers can make an active contribution to environmentalprotection while shipping,” said Klaus Conrad, Managing Director at GLS Germany. “It is unavoidablethat emissions are generated as part of goods transportation, whatever the mode. We are offeringour customers an opportunity to compensate for the CO2 impact.”
The new service is part of the broader GLS ‘Think Green’ initiative which combines a widerange of environmental measures at the various European subsidiaries.
