DHL Supply Chain has broken ground on a new logistics centre in Mönchengladbach, western Germany,for its new customer Primark, bringing 250 new jobs to the region.
The new facility, with a ground area of 40,000 sqm, will be located in the “Regiopark” nearmotorways A61 and A46. The site will include a four-section warehouse as well as a two-storeystructure for functional rooms and offices; it will also employ energy-efficient andenvironmentally-friendly technologies.
The fashion retailer Primark has chosen DHL as its logistics partner to help expand itsbusiness across Northern Europe. Mönchengladbach was chosen as the strategically favourablelocation for handling shipments to retail stores in Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands.
The new distribution centre will handle shipments for Primark stores located in theneighbouring countries. The facility will be purpose built to warehouse and dispatch fashiongarments in cartons and will also feature a hanging garment racking and rail transport system. DHLwill provide a customised logistics solution for Primark including all warehouse based activitiestogether with transport from the logistics centre to the growing number of Primark stores. Thefacility will start operating in mid-2012.

Primark was founded in 1969 in Dublin, Ireland, where it was known as Penneys. The companyopened its first retail store in Continental Europe in the Netherlands in December 2008. Primarkentered the German retail market a year later in 2009. Today, the Irish fashion retailer has 225stores throughout Western Europe.
