Deutsche Post DHL has increased the number of employees at its European air freight hub inLeipzig/Halle to 3,000.
Walter Scheurle, responsible for Human Resources at Deutsche Post DHL, officially welcomed the3,000 employee handing over the new employment contract in a symbolic gesture today. “As theworld’s leading logistics company, we take our responsibility towards our employees and societyvery seriously in every country in the world. That’s why we are so glad to keep our promise ofcontinuously creating new jobs in the Leipzig/Halle region. The 3,000th employment contract atDHL’s Leipzig hub demonstrates how attractive this site is as one of the most modern express hubsin the world,” he declared.
Nearly 90% of hub employees come from the Leipzig/Halle area. “We are an important employer forthe region and have given many individuals the opportunity to re-enter work,” said Eric Malitzke,Managing Director of DHL Hub Leipzig GmbH and Director of DHL Hubs & Gateways. “With 3,000employees and the wide job range, the hub also increases the region’s overall economicattractiveness.”
The range of professionals required to keep the hub up and running is large, DHL pointed out. Itgoes from loaders and sorters offering less qualified individuals the opportunity for work tomaintenance engineers and aircraft mechanics, pilots and other specialists with academicdegrees.
DHL said it will continue hiring new personnel depending on demand. In addition, the companyoffers young people vocational training at the hub in different areas of logistics and IT.Currently, 70 trainees are working there as air cargo sales agents, warehouse specialists, ITspecialists and mechatronics specialists. This adds to professional training in officeadministration and warehouse logistics.
Deutsche Post DHL opened its European hub at the Leipzig/Halle airport in May 2008 after twoyears of construction investing about €300 million in the facility. The hub now handles an averageof 1,500 tonnes of freight every night flown in from all over the world. The sorting facility,which is the largest in the world with 6.5 kilometres in length, handles more than 100,000 parcelsand documents per hour. Currently, the hub operates regular daily flights to over 50 destinationsin Europe, Asia and the USA making it one of the most important DHL Express hubs along withCincinnati and Hong Kong.
