PostNord has signed a 15-year lease for a new combined pallet and parcel terminal to be builtnear Stockholm. The terminal will become the post and parcel operator’s largest, with about 450
employees, and is expected to be ready by end of 2013.The total investment with partners Corem Property Group and NREP Logistics is expected to bearound SKr550 million.
PostNord decided in autumn 2010 to invest in a new terminal structure in Sweden, to provideincreased flexibility to meet the substantial anticipated changes in mail and parcel volumes. Partof this investment is the establishment of a single parcel and pallet terminal in Järfälla, northwest of Stockholm and the modernisation of a package terminal in Segeltorp, south ofStockholm.
The collection, sorting and distribution of pallets and packages that currently takes place fromthe terminals in Segeltorp, Tomteboda, Arninge, Märsta, Bromma, Kallhäll, Satra and Darkness willbe consolidated into these two points in Stockholm, the rebuilt terminal at Segeltorp and the newterminal in Järfälla. The Järfälla termina, about 15km northwest of Stockholm, is locatednear the E18 and the interchange that will connect the planned dual carriageway bypass Stockholmwith E18.
Anders Holm, PostNord’s director of logistics operations in Sweden, said: “The establishment inJärfälla and rebuilding of Segeltorp means that we can increasingly coordinate the delivery ofpallets and packages. Our capacity and productivity will increase, and the new structure also haspositive environmental effects. Among other things, it will reduce PostNord’s use of trucks andvans by more than 1.3 million km per year.
The terminal in Järfälla will house the most modern sorting machines on the market, and thebuilding’s total area will be closer to 19,000 sqm, with the capacity to handle about 60,000packages and 3,500 pallets per day. PostNord said the building and sorting machines would be veryenergy efficient, and will meet the criteria for so-called green building certification. It wouldcontain sorting staff, drivers, administrative staff, sales people, specialists, and regionalmanagement.
Holm said the new terminal would create around 450 jobs created in Järfälla, most of which wouldbe terminal workers and drivers.
