Hazmat false alarm at UPS facility in the US

A suspicious package that created a Hazmat alert yesterday at a UPS warehouse in Norfolk,Virginia, contained a leaking fire extinguisher, according to investigators.

According to the Norfolk Fire Department, a parcel discharged a white powdery substance as itwas passing down a conveyer belt in the facility, triggering a response from hazardous materialsspecialists from the department. 

The building was temporarily evacuated in order to ensure the safety of the 36 staff, accordingto the MSN news service.  Fire officials said the fire extinguishers were being shipped fromone business to another.

No-one from UPS responded to questions from CEP-Research at the time of writing to clarifywhether the shipment containing the fire extinguisher was identified and labelledappropriately.
