Interview – Spanish express firm Nacex improves revenues and volumes

Paul Kil

Spanish express and parcel delivery operator Nacex has recovered from the small drop in revenuesand shipping volumes thanks to the improving overall market and successful launch of new products,

a senior manager told CEP-Research.

“During the last quarter of 2010, we already experienced an increase in shipments. This year, the growth is continuing so the market seems to be recovering,” Paul Kil, Nacex internationalmanager, said in an interview at the transport logistic fair in Munich last month.

“We launched new services including the economic solution pluspack which is a bit cheaper and abit less urgent. The e-service we launched last year is also going very well.”

Pluspack is a door-to-door service for multiple shipments in a single parcel/package todestinations in mainland Spain or Portugal with a maximum weight of 20 kg. It guarantees deliverywithin 24/48 hours in towns and cities with a Nacex office, all other towns are served within atime range of a further 24 hours.

In June last year, Nacex launched ‘e-Nacex’, a door-to-door service for online retailersshipping parcels up to 20 kg that originate from internet sales (e-commerce) to destinations inmainland Spain or Portugal. Kil stressed that this service has turned to be very successful withgreat demand from customers.

E-Nacex provides complete online tracking, return service and a pre-notification per e-mail orvia sms, among other features also offered in all Nacex services. This product simplifies all toolsthat customers need so they do not have to invest their own resources and can devote their entireattention to their business.

Another new service is Nacex DOC’s, which is designed for the transportation of urgent documentsin a rigid envelope weighing up to 1 kg. Doc’s allows customers to send their documents to Spain,Portugal, Andorra, Gibraltar and the islands including the Balearics, Canaries, Azores and Madeirawith all the advantages of the company’s wide portfolio of services.

Kil claimed that customers are now spending more money on delivery services again and appreciatethe quality of Nacex. They are tending to come back to the operator after trying out cheaperproviders that offer poorer quality, he said.

“The reason is that if you use a cheaper provider, the overall quality turns out to be not thatgood at the end. Especially when it comes to express delivery, the drivers have to be very reliableand cheaper companies cannot always guarantee that.”

Looking ahead, Kil is expecting more future growth. He said that the overall Spanish expressmarket has grown as well but added: “It is still not where it was in 2008.”

Further expansion of the company will depend on the volumes, Kil said. “Ideally, we would liketo have more partner networks but this depends on whether we have enough demand for it.” As forpossible cooperations, Kil indicated that “it’s something that can’t be done in one day”. “Let’ssee what the future brings,” he concluded.

Nacex has an extensive network with over 310 branches throughout Spain, Portugal and Andorra andoperates 29 distribution hubs in Spain and Portugal.
