Postal operators in Europe are ahead of their CO2 emission reduction targets, according to a newreport from industry association PostEurop.

Between 2007 and 2009, the 16 European Postal Operators participating in its Greenhouse GasReduction Programme cut their CO2 emissions by 465,000 tonnes collectively. This was a 15 per centreduction, including a 13 per cent decline in 2009 alone, PostEurop’s 2010 Environmental Reportshowed.

This figure was well ahead of the 10 per cent reduction target for 2012 that the 16operators, who represent about 75 per cent of European mail volumes, set in 2008. The data wasverified by an independent audit.

PostEurop noted that the significant reduction in CO2 emissions in 2009 was mainly due topostal operators switching from conventional to Green Electricity supply. The direct impact ofmoving to Green Electricity in 2009 amounted to 297,000 tonnes, which was about 63 per cent of thetotal reduction.

“2009 has been a remarkable year for Environmental experts and the results speaks for itself.Without a doubt, this proves that we are on the right track and motivates us to work together withcustomers, suppliers and other stakeholders,” commented Stéphanie Scouppe, Chairperson of PostEuropEnvironment Working Group.

“The sharing of best practices, ideas and engagement within the programme for mutual benefitsof our members has paved way for new and concrete Environmental initiatives to further increaseefforts to meet and exceed our goal beyond next year. I am confident and optimistic that oursystematic approach will yield even more great results in the future,” affirmed Dr. Botond Szebeny,PostEurop Secretary General.

CO2 emissions data collection and sharing was made possible for European Postal Operatorsbased on a common CO2 measurement protocol established in April 2008.
