CTT to cut emissions with electric vehicles

CTT-Correios de Portugal is investing in 75 electric vehicles for city deliveries as part of itsefforts to cut CO2 emissions.



The Portuguese postal operator plans to have the environmentally-friendly vans, which willalso reduce operating costs, on the road by 2013. The vans have an operating range of up to 100kmand a top speed of 40km/hour.

At the same time, CTT wants to make its remaining 3,000 vehicles, which operate on fossilfuels, more efficient by renewing a large number of the heavier trucks and purchasing more than 100bicycles and electric scooters. Other measures to reduce fuel consumption and environmental impactinclude external energy audits and eco-driving training for drivers.

The Portuguese operator has managed to cut its energy fuel bill by €150,000 over the pastthree years and reduce its CO2 footprint from 15,700 tonnes in 2007 to 14,800 tonnes in 2010.
