UPS has launched new direct flights from Tokyo to Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, and Guangzhou,southern China, as part of its commitment to Japan following the devastating earthquake and tsunami
that hit the country last month.Departing from Tokyo’s Narita Airport, UPS will fly directly to Taipei Taoyuan InternationalAirport four times a week starting from March 30 and once a week to Guangzhou Baiyun Airport fromApril 2, using an MD-11 aircraft.
Masato Umeno, president of UPS Japan, said: “UPS remains confident in Japan’s recovery from theearthquake and tsunami. Our new flights demonstrate UPS’s commitment to Japan, while at the sametime strengthening our air links from Tokyo.”
He added that Japanese businesses were already benefiting from UPS’s direct flights to Shenzhenand Shanghai from Tokyo and Osaka. “With the direct flights to Taipei and Guangzhou, UPS willprovide Japanese customers increased access to the rest of Asia, helping them compete moreeffectively in the global market,” Umeno concluded.
Just a few days after the earthquake occurred in Japan in the first half of March, The UPSFoundation announced that it would provide $1 million in relief aid support for Japanese victims.The funds would be used for in-kind transportation of emergency supplies, trained humanitarianlogistics personnel, and financial support.
