FedEx expands in eastern China with new depot

FedEx station in Suzhou

FedEx Express has opened a new depot in Suzhou, a key economic city in Jiangsu Province, easternChina, to meet growing customer demand in the region.

Located in the Suzhou High Technology Zone, the 2,230 sqm facility is the third FedEx station inthe rapidly developing city. It will handle the pick-up and delivery of international expressshipments for customers in the city’s New District and part of its downtown area.

The new station consists of an office and warehouse, including an advanced inbound and outboundsorting system, which can sort up to 3,000 shipments per hour. All packages are connected to theFedEx global network through the nearby FedEx express gateway at Shanghai Pudong InternationalAirport.

Audrey Cheong, managing director for international service operations at FedEx China, said: “FedEx is committed to growing with the local Suzhou market by continually investing in itsoperations and improving our service offerings to meet local demands. The new station willstrengthen our operation capabilities and flexibility to support FedEx business growth in Suzhouand east China.”

Suzhou’s imports and exports totalled more than $1 trillion during China’s 11th Five-year Plan(2006 to 2010), almost tripling the level during the previous five years. In 2010 alone, Suzhou’sexports and imports rose 36.1% to $274.08 billion

To support Suzhou’s booming foreign trade, FedEx has been continuously enhancing its services tosupport the city’s remarkable volume growth and demand for reliable, fast delivery services. Thecompany introduced its first Boeing 777 freighter to Shanghai in January 2010, offering customersin Suzhou and key cities in east China a two-hour improvement in cut-off times for their US-boundshipments.

Customers in Suzhou have also been profiting from later cut-off times for all FedExinternational low-value shipments destined for Europe since August 2010. The two-hour improvementsfor US and Europe-bound shipments have resulted in more time and greater flexibility for customersin Suzhou in meeting their growing business demands, FedEx claimed.

FedEx established operations in Suzhou in 2003.
