TNT today completed the delivery of 70,000 blankets to Japan, on behalf of the World FoodProgramme, to assist with the support of the thousands of people displaced by the recent
earthquake, tsunami and nuclear radiation incident in the north-east of the country.TNT told CEP-Research that the deliveries were done in four batches, with the final one arrivingat destination in north-east Japan this morning. The deliveries are part of a long-term logisticspartnership between the two parties, which set up their Moving the World initiative in 2002 to helpfight world poverty. The initiative has since expanded, with TNT participating in 18 emergencylogistics relief operations with WPF since 2005.
Meanwhile, FedEx has committed US$1 million in cash and in-kind transport to support earthquakeand tsunami relief efforts in Japan. It said its long-standing relationships with humanitarianorganisations would allow FedEx to lend its transport and logistics expertise to support severalagencies in their vital relief work following the devastation, including the American Red Cross,the Salvation Army, Heart to Heart International, Direct Relief International, Water MissionsInternational, The United Way Worldwide, World Vision and Project Hope.
The support is targeted to help these agencies provide emergency and humanitarian relief,including food, shelter, medical supplies, water purification units, blankets and hygiene kits.
Both TNT and FedEx said their respective operations in Japan were almost back to normal, afterexperiencing a variety of disruptions since the earthquake and tsunami on 11 March. CEP-Researchwill publish a full update article later this week.
