GLS has invested €4 million in the construction of the second European data centre nearFrankfurt, central Germany, for more data security.
Currently, around 1.2 million GLS parcels across Europe are monitored at the existing computercentre at the company’s European hub with 20 million data records covering every step of ashipment.
Johannes Ruttinger, GLS Chief Information Officer, commented: “Modern information technology isas important today as the physical transport networks are. The productive systems remain at thefirst centre but everything is mirrored and synchronised at the second site. This way, we canswitch within ten minutes in a case of emergency.”
In addition, GLS will use the ‘duplicated data centre’ near Frankfurt for statistical andreporting systems.
Construction work at the site of the new GLS depot started at the end of February with the aimto establish a further state-of-the-art server farm with the latest technology in the comingmonths. The new facility is due to be completed in August this year. The installation of technicalsystems will then take about one month. In October 2011, GLS expects to start operating the newdata centre.
At an area of 400 sqm, the building offers space for several hundreds of interconnected highperformance computers. A number of safety and emergency systems ensure smooth operation, GLSadded.
