Pharmaceutical provider ALK-Abelló Arzneimittel has decided to switch all its product deliveriesto pharmacies across Germany to Trans-o-flex ThermoMed, the specialist for temperature-controlled
shipments within the Trans-o-flex group.Until now, the German subsidiary of the Danish pharmaceutical company ALK-Abelló, whichspecialises in allergy products, has transported its medicines using Trans-o-flex’s standardnetwork, only using Trans-o-flex ThermoMed for products requiring extremely high or lowtemperatures.
Trans-o-flex ThermoMed vehicles provide two separate cooling chambers within its loading space. As part of the cooperation, ALK-Abelló will make use the so-called ambient temperature range of15-25 °C. In addition, online temperature monitoring provides a written quality assurancecertificate once the products have been delivered.
ALK-Abelló claimed the decision to transport all its pharmaceutical products within this ambienttemperature range throughout the year provided several benefits for its customers. Rolf Külzer, director for distribution & logistics, and wholesale officer at ALK-Abelló, said: “Theguaranteed transport of the goods within the ambient temperature range meets our products’stability criteria and, if necessary, can be documented in writing. Extreme weather-relatedtemperature fluctuations thus no longer have an impact on the deliveries to the pharmacies, whichsimplifies planning processes for our customers.”
Carsten Glos, managing director of Trans-o-flex ThermoMed. said: “Customers like ALK-Abelló showhow important it was for us and our customers to change from a one-temperature to a two-temperaturenetwork.” Until 2009, the temperature range was between 2°C and 8°C. Following several investmentsin new vehicles with two separate cooling chambers, it is now also possible to deliver productsthat require temperatures of between 15°C and 25°C, the company said.
“This way, we can offer all pharmaceutical customers a service that guarantees full compliancewith the legal provisions and optimal drug safety,” said Glos. “Even those customers with differenttemperature requirements can now benefit from excellent services from a single-source.”
Trans-o-flex Thermomed’s nationwide network across Germany consists of two sorting centres and38 depots, with 600 staff.
