Both UPS and FedEx were once again among Fortune magazine’s World’s Most Admired Companies, withFedEx ranked number eight overall across all industry sectors, and UPS topping the table for
delivery companies. UPS came in at number 30 in the overall cross-industry list – an apparentanomaly reflecting the rather complex scoring methods used.The list is drawn on behalf of Fortune by the Hay Group from the 1,000 largest US companiesranked by revenue; non-US companies in Fortune’s Global 500 database with revenue of $10 billion ormore; and the top foreign companies operating in the US.
The companies are then sorted by industry, with a total of 673 companies from 32 countriessurveyed. To create the 57 industry lists, Hay asked executives, directors, and analysts to ratecompanies in their own industry on nine criteria, from investment value to socialresponsibility.
To arrive at the top 50 Most Admired Companies overall, the Hay Group asked 4,100 executives,directors, and securities analysts who had responded to the industry surveys to select the 10companies they admired most.
Within its delivery industry, UPS dominated the scoring on the nine attributes used for judging,placing first on eight of the nine. The company was rated first in its industry on the attributesof innovation, use of corporate assets, social responsibility, quality of management, financialsoundness, long-term investment, quality of products and services and global competitiveness.
UPS has been ranked number one in the delivery industry in 26 of the 30 “Most Admired” surveysconducted by Fortune, while FedEx has ranked among the top 20 overall Most Admired Companies listsince 2001.
