DHL Express has signed agreements with DNV Petroleum Services and Barclays Capital, theinvestment banking division of Barclays Bank PLC, for its GOGREEN Carbon Neutral shipping
services.Singapore-based DNVPS will use DHL’s carbon neutral service across its global markets, includingits specialist laboratories in Singapore, Oslo, Rotterdam, Houston and Fujairah.
The multi-million dollar express contract for DHL GOGREEN Carbon Neutral service covers theoutbound transport of DNVPS’ sampling equipment and the inbound regional transportation of bunkeroil samples for testing. For a surcharge, DHL will measure and offset carbon emissions forinternational air express shipments and provide DNVPS with a certification stating the total amountof CO2 offset on their behalf each year.
The DHL GOGREEN service complements an ongoing environmental drive at DNVPS to improve energyefficiency and minimise waste in its laboratories and offices. Each year, the company lays downenvironmental key performance indicators aimed at reducing energy consumption, hazardous materialsand non-essential business travel.
Between 2008 and 2009, DNVPS’ laboratories lowered energy consumption by 16%, while hazardouswastes were down 4%. During the same period, DNVPS employees also helped achieve a 17% CO2 emissionreduction per person from 1.2 tons to 1 ton within DNV’s 300 offices across 100countries.

Separately, Barclays Capital has chosen DHL’s GOGREEN Carbon Neutral service to offset carbonemissions generated by international courier services throughout Asia Pacific. Barclays Capitalsaid it is the first time it has adopted a region-wide carbon offset solution. Since signing up forthe service in June 2010, DHL Express has offset 33,420kg for Barclays Capital in Asia Pacific.

Barclays Group sets three-year environmental performance targets worldwide, managed through aGroup-wide Environmental Management System (EMS) certified to ISO 14001. By the end of 2011, thegroup plans to have cut carbon dioxide emissions, energy and water usage by 6% per employeeworldwide. It also supports individual business units to seek ISO standard certification for theirlocal EMS and Barclays Capital operations in Europe and in Singapore have achieved this. In the US,Barclays Capital is consolidating eight data centres into four key sites to reduce electricityconsumption by approximately 4.4%.
DHL was the first logistics company to introduce a carbon-neutral shipping service in the formof DHL GOGREEN in 2007 to offer companies a more environmentally-responsible shipping option. Itcalculates carbon emissions generated from the transporting of each shipment and offsets emissionsvia carbon management projects.
DHL GOGREEN customers can choose to send all or a selection of their international shipmentsusing the DHL GOGREEN Carbon Neutral service. For a surcharge, DHL will offset the carbon emissionsfor international air express shipments. Ensuring accountability and transparency, the programme isannually verified by an independent certifying body – the Swiss-based Société Générale deSurveillance. Customers receive certification from DHL stating the total amount of CO2 offset ontheir behalf during the year.
