Devastating Christchurch earthquake disrupts deliveries in New Zealand

Earthquake devastates Christchurch

Mail, parcel and freight delivery services in New Zealand have been affected by the devastatingearthquake in Christchurch, the country’s second largest city, with at least 65 people reported

dead.

A national state of emergency has been declared following significant loss of life and severedamage to roads, buildings and infrastructure. Power outages are widespread and communicationssystems have been compromised.

All New Zealand Post and Express Couriers operations in Christchurch will remain suspended untilMonday, 28 February 2011, when they will be further reviewed. The suspension includes ChristchurchMail Centre processing operations, postal and courier deliveries and PostShop stores and boxlobbies.

New Zealand Post said: “The Canterbury earthquake has caused significant damage aroundChristchurch, including to our network. This will mean disruption and delays to New Zealand Postpostal and retail services and we appreciate your patience in what is a challenging time foreveryone.”

“Our sympathy and thoughts are with everyone affected by the earthquake. The welfare of ourstaff is paramount and we are continuing the process of assessing whether they and their familiesare okay and providing assistance,” NZ Post added.

Australia Post also announced today that there will be likely delays to mail deliveries. As forincoming mail to Australia, all international mail items sent from Christchurch and the SouthIsland in New Zealand to Australia are expected to be delayed. In the same way, all internationalletters from Australia destined to the South Island are also likely to be delayed.

TNT Express also suspended its operations in the Christchurch following the earthquake andsubsequent aftershocks. “Delays will be experienced with collection and delivery of freight inChristchurch and across the South Island,” the company said.
