DHL delivers for Gewandhaus Orchestra

DHL will once again transport more than 100 musical instruments of the German GewandhausOrchestra Leipzig as its official logistics partner during the orchestra’s concert tours across the

world this year.

The high-value cargo is worth several million euros and consists of sensitive and uniqueinstruments. The total cargo weight is 6,000 kg with a volume of approximately 60 m3. From 500 gtriangles to kettledrums weighing 133 kg, DHL also transports music stands, sheet music, theconductor’s rostrum and the musicians’ wardrobes.

DHL said it ensures that the temperature level is continuously controlled and documented duringtransportation since the instruments are very sensitive and can be damaged easily. The location ofthe transport vehicles is continuously monitored by GPS. The company also takes care of all customsformalities along the way.

As part of its tour, the world’s largest professional orchestra will give guest performances inAsia from 4 to 21 March and in various European cities from September to December.

Wolfgang Giehl, Head of Corporate Brand Marketing, Deutsche Post DHL, commented: “To make everyconcert a success, it is crucial to ensure safe transportation and meet the tight schedule. Theplanning of a complete concert tour starts up to one and a half years in advance of the openingconcert.”

The Gewandhaus Orchestra opened its concert tour in Leipzig last week (17 -19 February)presenting one of the two tour programmes for the first time. As a particular highlight, DHL showedthe video of the concert as a live stream on its website last Friday.
