UPS bites wider with iPhone app rollout

UPS is aiming to bite off a larger chunk of the mobile commerce market by rolling out its appfor Apple iPhones to more countries in Europe and North America.

The company’s popular UPS Mobile App for iPhone is now being offered to customers in Germany,the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Canada. The application enables customers to ship and trackpackages as well as find the nearest UPS location from their iPhone.

The expansion of the iPhone application follows a previously announced extension of the UPSMobile App for BlackBerry, UPS Mobile App for Android and the mobile Web site, m.ups.com, to thesame five countries. The apps alone have been downloaded almost 2 million times, UPS stated.

“The expansion of our UPS Mobile App for iPhone is the latest in a series of initiatives tobring the power and convenience of UPS mobile technology to more customers on more devices in moremarkets across the globe,” said Jordan Colletta, vice president of customer technology marketing atUPS. “Extending our mobile offerings makes logistics even easier for our customers.”

The UPS Mobile App for iPhone, like the UPS Mobile Apps for BlackBerry and Android and themobile Web site, enables users to track shipments, create shipments using their My UPS address bookand calculate shipping rates and time-in-transit. When customers are logged in, the trackinghistory displays and is automatically refreshed. UPS tracking numbers also can be nicknamed forquick reference.

With this latest announcement, customers can use their iPhones to create shipping labels in theU.S., Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Canada and France for document and non-document shipmentsworldwide. Shipping labels can be e-mailed in a PDF file for printout. As an added feature of theUPS Mobile App, customers can use their device’s GPS capabilities to find the nearest UPSlocation.

The UPS Mobile App for iPhone now is available at the App Store and on iTunes. The UPS MobileApp for iPhone is currently ranked among the Top Five Free Business Apps in the App Store.
