DHL Express resumes limited services in Egypt

DHL Express said today it has re-started limited delivery services in Egypt, but the services ofthe main other express operators remain suspended or severely restricted.

Earlier this week, DHL, TNT, FedEx, UPS and Aramex all said that they had largely suspendedservices in the country in response to the social unrest.

Over the last few days, however, DHL Express has managed to resume partial collection anddelivery services, spokesman Jörg Wiedemann told CEP-Research. “We have commenced delivery servicesinside the country through secure pick-up and delivery points,” he said.  “We are doing ourbest to keep the Egyptian economy connected to the rest of the world.”

Import of goods into Cairo Airport and export of outbound shipments had not been interruptedsince DHL had its own customs clearance operation, he pointed out.  Moreover, the group wasstill forwarding general cargo depending on available airline services at the airport, headded.

In contrast, TNT Express has decided to extend its suspension of services until February 5 sincethere was no change to the prevailing situation in the country. The company renewed its requestthat countries should not forward any material in order to facilitate clearing of the existingbacklog held at the feeding hubs and the country gateway. The company’s service in Yemen was alsoaffected today by the general strike call in the country.

FedEx services in Egypt remain suspended due to the political situation.  The company’sfacilities at Paris Charles De Gaulle, London Heathrow and Dubai International airports are holdingall shipments for Egypt until further notice.

UPS is currently only collecting and delivering goods within the Cairo City and Greater Cairoarea.
