FedEx has launched a new solution for shipping deep frozen, temperature-sensitive healthcareproducts around the world.
The company said the innovative end-to-end service, branded as the ‘FedEx Deep Frozen ShippingSolution’, is an important component of the broader FedEx HealthCare Solutions portfolio ofservices for customers in the life sciences and biopharma industries.
The solution uses liquid nitrogen dry vapour technology that maintains a temperature of below-150° for up to 10 days using the CryoPort Express Dry Shipper. Unlike dry ice, this technology isclassified as non-hazardous, which eliminates the complexities associated with being classified asdangerous goods. It also reduces the environmental impact since the non-dangerous goods containeris recycled and liquid nitrogen evaporates harmlessly. In addition, the overall process is simple.Customers place orders online through a customised FedEx portal.
FedEx provides the pre-conditioned container to the customer to load their temperature-sensitiveproduct and then delivers it to its final destination while actively monitoring the shipment andintervening if needed during transit. Finally, it picks up the container and returns it forrefurbishing.
Raj Subramaniam, senior vice president of Global Marketing for FedEx, said: “The FedEx DeepFrozen Shipping Solution combines innovative dry vapour technology with the reliability of FedExlogistics management to provide customers with the highest level of integrity and security fortheir high-value frozen shipments worldwide. It is truly a complete solution that enhances thecurrent services we provide our healthcare customers, giving them an even greater peace ofmind.”
In particular, customers involved with clinical trials, diagnostics, biotechnology ormanufacturing of pharmaceuticals will benefit from the solution, FedEx pointed out.
Carl Asmus, vice president of International Market Development for FedEx, commented: “We haveheard from customers that they want a simpler alternative for shipping temperature-sensitiveproducts that eliminates the complexities involved with dry ice.”
The FedEx Deep Frozen Shipping Solution is classified under the International Air TransportAssociation (IATA) as a non-hazardous dry shipper and meets the requirements to handle bothinfectious substances (UN3373) and non-infectious clinical samples.
FedEx HealthCare Solutions is committed to offering specialty services to the healthcareindustry.
