UPS Worldship goes green around the world

UPS has expanded its Worldship shipping system with a carbon neutral option now being offered tomore than 400,000 customers in Europe, Asia and the Americas region.

UPS Worldship customers now have the option of paying a small fee to calculate and offset thecarbon emissions associated with their shipments. UPS collects the fees and uses the funds forenvironmentally responsible projects around the world. The company said it is matching the offsetpurchases up to $1 million, doubling the impact of participation.

Alan Gershenhorn, senior vice president of global sales and marketing, commented: “This productwas developed in response to customer demand for environmentally responsible shipping options. Now,UPS carbon neutral will be accessible to the majority of our customer base.”

The calculation to measure the CO2 impact of the customers’ shipments is based on current andhistorical operational data, including distance and transport mode and a comprehensive carboninventory.

UPS’s proprietary calculation methodology and processes are verified by Societe Generale deSurveillance (SGS). Additionally, the carbon offset process is certified by The CarbonNeutralCompany. The calculator is based on Greenhouse Gas Protocol which is the most widely usedinternational standard for carbon accounting and reporting.

UPS carbon neutral complements the company’s sustainable business practices worldwide. Theseinclude operational efficiency, conservation initiatives and industry-leading innovations. Forexample, the company recently was named by Climate Counts as the leader in the consumer shippingcategory for the second consecutive year.
