media.

The 85 employees at the call centre in Moncton, a city in New Brunswick, make up half of itsaccounting staff. The jobs will be phased out over the next six months.

UPS Canada will still employ 400 people in the city after the cuts in the accounting centre andat a customer contact centre. The company has some 1,000 workers in total in New Brunswick, including customs clearance and brokerage operation in Fredericton, the province’s capitalcity.

Dan Shea, vice-president of human resources for UPS Canada, noted that the company is alwaysexpanding and contracting depending upon the business climate and the recent decision should not beviewed in isolation.

“It’s an efficiency move that will result in some cost savings but it also allows us to getbetter asset utilisation of things like communications platforms, other fixed-cost elements,” Sheasaid.

Shea added the firm will soon be expanding in Fredericton. “We’re going to be adding at least 40jobs in Fredericton in the next six months, 25 in the next few weeks,” he said.
