Leading companies in the international express and parcels industries, including UPS, TNT, DHL,Itella SmartPost and Geodis, made executive and senior managerial appointments last month.
At UPS, Robert “Bob” Stoffel retired on 1 January 2011 as senior vice president for supplychain, strategy, engineering and sustainability after 35 years of service. Stoffel’sresponsibilities will be assumed by chief operating officer David Abney. His responsibilities inthe strategy arena have been assigned to Alan Gershenhorn, the senior vice president for worldwidesales and marketing.
Stoffel joined UPS in 1975 as a part-time loader/unloader at the company, and rose to UPS’shighest ranks, helping build the broad array of logistics services that now define UPS. Under hisleadership, UPS has announced target goals for improving the carbon efficiency of its airline andmiles-per-gallon performance of its vehicle fleet. The company also became the first global carrierto offer a carbon neutral shipping option in the US and now is widely recognised as asustainability leader.
UPS chairman and CEO Scott Davis commented: “Bob Stoffel has been a key leader in this company’sstrategy development and transformation from a domestic package delivery company to a globallogistics leader.”
TNT Express made several appointements in France, Italy and Benelux. In France, TNT Express CEOÉric Jacquemet resigned from his post on 31 December 2010 to become the CEO of Laboratoires SARBEC,the largest independent cosmetics company in France.
Jacquemet has worked at TNT Express for 24 years, seven of which in the position of CEO. He willbe replaced by François Baret who is a member of the Management Board and has been working as thecompany’s operations director (CFO) for seven years.
In Italy, Joost Bous has been appointed as the new Operations Director of TNT Express. Hepreviously worked at TNT Post Italy as managing director. Since 1999, Bous has occupied differentmanagerial positions in Belgium and the Netherlands before he arrived in Italy last year.
In the Benelux, Karl Moeremans and Frank Schreurs have been appointed at TNT Express as HRdirector and finance director respectively. Both men have been already employed by TNT Express.
In 1982, Moeremans joined the sales department of TNT Express Belgium to move abroad in 1992where he spent three years as project manager for TNT Express Europe. After a brief employment atBelgian Post in 1995, he returned to TNT Express Belgium in 1996 in the position of branch generalmanager. In 2008, he was promoted to regional director of TNT Express Belux. In his new role as HRdirector for Benelux, he remains an administrative manager for TNT Express in Belgium andLuxembourg.
Schreurs joined TNT Express commercial division in 1992. In 1998, he was appointed finance andadministration manager. In 2001, Schreurs was responsible for HR, finance and administration at TNTExpress Belux and as vice general manager he was also part of the Management Board of TNT inBelgium.
DHL Parcel Germany has appointed Andrej Busch as CEO with effect on 1 January 2011. He willreport to Jurgen Gerdes, head of Deutsche Post’s mail and parcel business. Since 2007, Busch hasbeen a member of the parcel division’s management board and responsible for marketing operationsuntil now.
In Estonia, Risto Eelmaa has been appointed CEO of Itella SmartPost, Itella’s parcel deliveryterminals network. Eelmaa will focus on increasing Itella SmartPost’s market share and proceed withthe development of the successful business model adopted by Itella SmartPost. He aims to double thecompany’s parcel volumes in 2011.
The major French transport and logistics group Geodis has appointed Gary Smith as executivevice-president. He will focus on developing the group’s global 4PL business as well as on strategyand the acquisitions policy to be implemented in the Americas region. Smith had developed and ledthe IBM Global Logistics Platform. Before joining IBM, Smith held executive positions with PepsiCo,Navistar International Corporation and Ford Motor Company.
