Austrian Post records record parcel volumes in 2010

Carl-Gerold Mende

Austrian Post has generated record parcel volumes this year delivering more than 56 millionparcels to recipients across the country.

Around 1,500 employees of Austrian Post’s parcel logistics division shipped 12% more parcels in2010 compared to 2009 which was already a strong year, the company said.

Carl-Gerold Mende, head of Austrian Post’s parcels logistics division, was pleased about thepositive result. “When it’s really important, the shipper just trusts us. We have clearly seen thisduring the past year. Through our reliability, we have increased the number of parcels enormously:6 million parcels more than during the previous year which means 1 million more parcels on averagethat our employees delivered every week. During the Christmas period, this figure is even higher.”& amp; amp; lt; /p>

As the reasons for the increase, Mende named the delivery quality and growth in e-commerce whichhas become strongly visible during the Christmas period.

The delivery time measurements have shown that the record numbers of transported shipments havenot been achieved at the expense of the delivery quality, Austrian Post stressed. More than 96% ofthe parcels within the universal service were delivered on time while the legal requirement of thedelivery quality is only 90%. For parcels of business customers, the delivery rates are evenhigher.

Austrian Post said this is one of the reasons why it is growing above-average in this segmentand is gaining a higher market share. For 2010, the Austrian postal operator expects an increase ofover 15% in business parcels.

The parcel division of Austrian Post already recorded a significant increase in 2009 despite thecrisis in Austria, especially thanks to its cooperation with the parcel operator Hermes in thesummer. “Thus we can see that not only customers rely on our quality but also our competitors,”Mende concluded.
