DHL sails ahead as Volvo Ocean Race logistics partner

DHL delivers for Volvo Ocean Race

DHL has become the Official Logistics Partner to the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12 and will provide afull portfolio of transport services, including express deliveries, for one of the world’s most

prestigious sailing events.

With exclusive rights secured for all international and domestic freight movements, DHL servicesfor the event will amount to a complete logistics solution encompassing air, sea and landtransportation of high value kit and equipment.

DHL said it will set up a detailed and full logistics plan for the upcoming Volvo Ocean Race. Inline with this plan, DHL will supply the race organisers, race teams and partners with the fullrange of freight forwarding and venue logistics services. Key services will include theport-to-port transportation of cargo and sailing equipment by air, sea and on land. As OfficialLogistics Partner to the Volvo Ocean Race, DHL will be responsible for the complete logisticsmanagement from pick-up of the teams’ cargo at any given venue to on-time delivery of thecontainers at the next race village.

In addition to air, ocean and road transportation services, DHL will provide full tracking &tracing of the cargo in transit as well as customs clearance and warehousing services. DHL willalso be responsible for ad-hoc Express shipments for the Volvo Ocean Race.

The next Volvo Ocean Race will start in the Spanish port of Alicante in the autumn of 2011 andfinish in Galway, Ireland, in the summer of 2012. During the nine months of competition, the teamswill sail over 39,000 nautical miles across the world’s most treacherous seas via Cape Town, AbuDhabi, Sanya (China), Auckland, around Cape Horn to Itajai (Brazil), Miami, Lisbon and Lorient(France). The first race of this kind took place in1973-74, and the 2011-12 race will be the 11thedition of the event.
