Japan’s Yamato to launch parcel delivery services in Hong Kong

Leading Japanese parcel operator Yamato Holdings plans to launch parcel delivery services inHong Kong next February, according to the Japan Today newspaper.

In January this year, Yamato already started operating similar services in Shanghai andSingapore.

Japan’s largest door-to-door parcel provider aims to set up seven distribution centres using 70vans and 31 trucks to provide eco-friendly and light-footed deliveries in highly populated HongKong, a company official said.

As part of the new launch, Yamato will offer a time designation service for delivery, handlerefrigerated and frozen parcels, and offer customers the possibility to settle payments ofpurchased goods upon delivery.

The company said that Hong Kong does not have high quality delivery services similar to the onesit offers although it is one of Asia’s leading cities with high GDP per capita.

In addition to the new parcel delivery service, Yamato Holdings plans to start building one ofJapan’s largest distribution centres near Tokyo’s Haneda Airport in January next year to becomeoperational in October 2012.

The total floor space of the main building will comprise about 170,000 sqm with the constructionto cost about YEN 54.2 billion (€480.62 million). To improve efficiency of its operations, Yamatoplan to introduce automated sorting machines and will also handle an increasing amount of freightto be shipped to Asian nations, Associated Press reported.
