UPS increased export volumes in Asia Pacific by as much as 35% in the three months endingSeptember 2010, including a 50% rise in outbound shipments from China and fast growth in
Asia-Europe business, according to top executives.Commenting after the company’s overall Q3 results, Derek Woodward, President, UPS Asia PacificRegion, declared: “UPS experienced another great quarter in Asia with nearly 35% growth in exportvolume. We also experienced a strong performance in our Asia-to-Europe trade lane export volumewith more than 30% growth.”
In Asia Pacific, UPS said its growth was led by China and Vietnam, both of which incurred a morethan 50% export volume increase compared to the same quarter in 2009. UPS in Hong Kong and Indiaachieved more than 30% growth in quarterly export volume.
“We are reaping the rewards of our investments in Asia, specifically our Asia Pacific hub inShenzhen and the international hub in Shanghai. UPS will also continue to expand our services inemerging markets such as Indonesia and Vietnam to help our customers better manage their supplychain,” Woodward added.
In Vietnam, UPS set up a joint venture with its local service partner earlier this year to speedup growth in the country, while in Indonesia, the company has broadened its alliance with majorlocal courier JNE to nationwide coverage.
UPS does not release non-US revenue figures on a regional basis, although Europe and AsiaPacific are its two major regions outside the home US market. However, Asia Pacific clearly grewmuch faster than Europe in the third quarter, given an overall 13% rise in average dailyinternational export volumes.
The company’s overall non-US international package business increased revenues by 11% to $2.7billion. The international package operating profit increased 34% to $419 million, pushing theoperating margin up to 15.7%.
