DHL launches Packstations in U-shape

Deutsche Post DHL has significantly expanded the capacities of its Packstations at 45 locationsin major German cities with new modular systems to be deployed in Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne and

Munich, among other cities.

As part of the enhancements, the present capacity of 76 secure lockers can be multipliedaccording to customer needs. For example, the maximum module version offers up to 390 lockers. Thesystem makes it possible to set up the machine diagonally or in a U-shape as well as adjusting thenumber of lockers during operations.

In addition to more capacity, the new system provides further simplifications for the customer. The screen is positioned lower which makes it easier to read in sunlight. The doors of the lockersare even better protected from ice and inserting larger shipments will also be possible in futurethrough the adjusted lockers.

Overall, the Packstation will become even more user-friendly. A 2D-scanner has been integratedoffering additional applications in future for new products and solutions such as the delivery andsale of mail products, DHL added.

DHL Germany said over 1.5 million customers have already registered for the DHL Packstation withthe number increasing daily.

“The Packstation has become part of everyday life like a branch office or a mailbox is. The usernumbers show that it is well established in Germany and therefore we want to offer our customers aneven better service with the new system,” said Jurges Gerdes, mail and parcel chief of DeutschePost DHL.

The modular design enables capacity to be adjusted to the actual demand at a particularlocation. This way, the redirection of parcels to a branch can be avoided to a large extent.

A total of 2,500 Packstations are currently available in Germany with 150 more units to bedeployed by the end of the year, nearly a third of them in modular mode.
