Spanish parcel company ASM acquires express firm Envipaq

Spanish parcel services provider Agencia Servicios Mensajeria (ASM) has acquired the localexpress delivery firm Envipaq and now claims to be the second-largest express operator in the

country.

ASM, owned by the Swiss family business Betlen AG, bought 100% of Envipaq for an undisclosedsum. At the end of last year, ASM was sold by German financial investor Arques Industries AG toBetlen AG for a symbolic price.

Madrid-based Envipaq was launched at the beginning of 2009 by a group of professionals with morethan 20 years of experience in the distribution of express parcels and documents. The companyoffers an extensive range in express delivery services adapting to the needs and working schedulesof its customers.

Bence Horvath, ASM chief executive and Betlen Group’s representative in Spain, commented: “WithEnvipaq, we have found the perfect partner to strengthen our network structure while achievinggreater proximity to our customers at the same time. I am fully convinced that this transactionwill benefit both companies as we get closer to the goal of becoming an industry leader, in amutually effective cooperation.”

Once the process of integrating the two networks is completed, which is expected within the nextweeks, ASM will count 3,200 workers, over 450 operating centres in Spain and Portugal with a fleetof more than 2,000 vehicles and 20 own depots. ASM claimed the acquisition made it into the secondlargest express operator in Spain and was a “decisive step” in its strategy to establish itself asa market leader.

However, the two leading Spanish express and parcel operators MRW and Seur have larger networksthan ASM, according to company information.

MRW has a network of 1,300 offices and 60 depots in Spain, Portugal, Andorra, Gibraltar andVenezuela, more than 13,000 employees or associated workers and a fleet of more than 4,500vehicles. It delivers about 25 million items a year and had revenues of €586 million in 2009.

Seur, with turnover of €569 million in 2009, has about 7,100 staff, a fleet of 3,700 vehiclesand a network of 85 regional offices, 10 transshipment platforms, 97 distribution platforms and 300retail outlets.
