FedEx Express has won the ‘Best Global Cargo Hub’ award for its main multimodal express facilityin Memphis.
The award from the Institute of Transport Management (ITM) was attributed to the hub’sachievement of successfully uniting the disparate capabilities of the city of Memphis includingroad, rail, river and air to support trade within the US.
“The FedEx World Hub in Memphis is the centrepiece of our global distribution and deliveryoperations,” said John Dunavant, vice president, Memphis World Hub. “The Memphis World Hub offersdirect connectivity between North America and Asia, as well as access to the other economic centresthrough our FedEx ‘Aerotropolis’ hubs in Paris and Guangzhou, and to points beyond.”

The Memphis World Hub is the oldest and largest facility in the FedEx Express network, providingovernight service to the entire US and serving 95% of the global economy on a 24- to 48-hour basis.It employs more than 15,000 people and operates over 5,000 flights each month.
The hub’s sorting system contains more than 300 miles of conveyor belts, capable of processingapproximately half a million packages per hour. Overall, more than two million packages movethrough the Memphis hub each business day.
Largely due to the presence of the FedEx hub, Memphis International Airport was again named theworld’s largest cargo airport in 2009.
