Spanish express operator MRW has signed an agreement with the global energy company Repsol toinstall distribution points with liquid petroleum gas (LPG) in its 41 operational platforms to
simplify the refuelling of its fleet. This agreement is in line with MRW’s environmental commitment to convert gradually 90% of itsvehicles on structured routes to LPG within the next four years while also renewing its fleet.
In the first step, MRW already set up a distribution point at its Barcelona site. In the comingfour weeks, four more fuel dispensers will be inaugurated at the MRW depots in Madrid, Valencia,Seville and Zaragoza.
MRW said it has taken these measures to reduce its nitrogen oxide emissions and other pollutantsthat have a direct effect on phenomena such as acid rain and which cause respiratory problems formany people. The company stressed that the new deal is another step towards socialresponsibility.
The liquid petroleum gas (LPG) for automobiles is the most used alternative fuel in the world. Its use allows considerable savings and contributes to better air quality in large cities. LPGreduces nitrogen oxides emissions by 96% and 99% of other polluting substances while considerablyreducing CO2 emissions. The noise levels are also cut down by up to 50%. In Europe, more than 7million vehicles are powered by LPG today.
“MRW wants to contribute to improving the life quality of people because that is exactly one ofthe goals of our Social Responsibility strategy. Earlier we pioneered in committing ourselves tosocial action and equality policies and now we are going to become a reference in our sector interms of environmental protection,” said Francisco Martín Villanueva, MRW Director General whoreplaced his father last year.
Every week, over 800 MRW vehicles cover the 1,250 structural routes travelling 1.6 million km onaverage which equals more than 83 km per year.
MRW was the first company to start using biodegradable and compostable envelopes for itsshipments a few weeks ago. The packaging is certified under European norm EN 13432 which iscurrently the only one to guarantee no environmental impact at all.
These new initiatives including LPG and bio envelopes have been driven by MRW’s SocialResponsibility Group and are a clear example of how the company makes decisions and launchesproducts and services designed not only for the present but also for future generations. Since1993, social responsibility has been one of the fundamental and strategic cornerstones of MRW.
