Swiss Post will cut 60-70 jobs at its Basel import parcels office after Deutsche Post decided toswitch delivery of German parcels in Switzerland to DHL.
Through this move from Deutsche Post, Swiss Post is losing three-quarters of the parcel businessaffecting 4,600 of the 6,300 import parcels handled daily at the Exchange Office Basel. This leavesonly 1,700 parcels for delivery by Swiss Post staff on a daily basis. Therefore, the postaloperator is obliged to cut between 60 and 70 jobs at the office.
The job cuts will affect customs agents, customs clearance officers and other logistics staff.Swiss Post said it is aware of its social responsibility and is drawing up the necessary measurestogether with the social partners. If possible, it will seek to employ the staff in questionelsewhere within the company.
To date, Swiss Post has cleared all parcels mailed to Switzerland from Germany through customsat the Exchange Office Basel located in the Swiss Post building and channelled them into its parceldelivery network. The major part of the revenues at the office was generated from these importparcels handled by about 90 employees.
“This source of revenue is now being eliminated. On 8 June, Deutsche Post began to graduallytransfer these parcels to the channel of its delivery company DHL. DHL will thus handle customsclearance and delivery of the parcels to Switzerland,” Swiss Post said in a statement.
Deutsche Post will gradually transfer its parcels to DHL for delivery. The transfer is scheduledfor completion in autumn with all requests related to delivery and customs clearance of its parcelshandled by DHL from now on.
