DHL goes green with world’s first bio-sourced payment cards

Deutsche Post DHL has launched the world’s fist bio-sourced payment cards in cooperation withGemalto, a global leader in digital security, to further reduce its environmental impact.

From 1 June onwards, Deutsche Post DHL offers its corporate customers the POSTCARD GOGREEN whichcan be used to pay for shipping letters and parcels and for express deliveries. It has the samephysical format and characteristics as common payment cards. Each card is associated with thecustomer through a unique numeric code, with 100,000 POSTCARDS GOGREEN being deployed in thisinitial roll-out.

Gemalto’s bio-sourced payment card is made from a renewable material derived from corn,sugarcane and potato starch. This material is easily recyclable and compostable through small scaleindustrial units and reduces the global ecological footprint of the production process.

The introduction of the bio-sourced payment cards is in line with Deutsche Post DHL’s climateprotection programme GoGreen. It aims to reduce the CO2 emissions Deutsche Post DHL generates forevery letter and parcel sent, and across all of its operations including subcontractedtransportation services. The POSTCARD GOGREEN complements the expanded portfolio ofclimate-friendly products and services that Deutsche Post DHL launched in 2008.

The company provides digitalsolutions for mobile connectivity, identity and data protection, credit card safety, health andtransportation services, e-government and national security.
