UPS Romania quadruples capacity with new Bucharest airport logistics centre

UPS Romania has officially opened a new logistics facility at Bucharest’s Otopeni Airport toexpand its presence and boost growth in the country.

The facility functions as a combined air gateway, regional centre and freight office while alsoproviding package sorting and storage as well as logistics and distribution services. Located atthe International Airport Henri Coanda (Otopeni), Romania’s busiest international airport, it isreplacing three former UPS facilities in Bucharest thus increasing the sorting capacity andensuring the highest service levels for customers in Romania now and in the future, UPS said in astatement.

The 2,500 sqm facility will serve 60% of the Romanian territory with 24 delivery vehiclesoperating daily in the Bucharest metropolitan area alone. Meanwhile, it has the capacity to sortmore than 4,000 packages per hour quadrupling the capacity of the previous facility. Inboundshipment volumes can now be sorted an hour earlier resulting in faster deliveries to Bucharest andmore time available for pick-ups. Meanwhile, customers located in certain areas on the northernside of the city will also benefit from later cut-off times for pick-ups. At the same time, itenhances service parts logistics capabilities for UPS Supply Chain Solutions.

“Romania is among the largest and most dynamic markets in Eastern Europe, and this facilityproves again its importance to UPS,” said Michael Mavropoulos, General Manager, UPS Greece, Balkans& Mediterranean. “We are optimistic about the development of our business here, and thisinvestment is part of a long-term strategy to ensure that UPS meets Romania’s increasing demand forreliable and efficient express and freight services.”

UPS entered the Romanian market in 1990 offering its services through an authorised serviceprovider, Romtrans, and from 2000 through a Romtrans subsidiary, Trans Courier Service, which UPSacquired in 2008. UPS currently employs 136 people in the country and operates a dedicated flightevery weekday between Otopeni and its main European air hub in Cologne, Germany, effectivelyconnecting Romanian customers to the rest of Europe and the world.
