Correos de México is holding talks with DHL, UPS and FedEx over a potential strategic allianceto develop its international business, especially with Europe, according to reports.
The state-owned Mexican national postal operator, also known as Sepomex, has started talks withthe three companies with the aim of signing one or several strategic agreements enabling it todevelop new business channels for its international express service, leading Mexican newspaperReforma reported.
Various options are under consideration, including using the networks of competitors, creating ajoint brand or offering domestic transport services for the foreign firms, the newspaper wrote,citing management sources at the postal operator.
Correos de México is also interested in talking with rival Estafeta, one of the leading expresscompanies in the country, Reforma said. The latter’s managing director Ingo Babrikowski has showninterest in an alliance with the postal operator. “It would be beneficial for our company becauseit would allow us to grow,” he commented.
A decision over an alliance could be taken later this month at a supervisory board meeting butany agreement would also need approval by the Mexican Communications and Transport Ministry.
The postal operator already offers the traditional EMS international express service through theinternational postal network as well as domestic courier services through its Mexpost unit.
