TNT wants to cut CO2 emissions 45% by 2020

TNT Planet Me

TNT today announced it aims to reduce CO2 emissions 45% by 2020 compared to 2007 levels, whichis one of the most ambitious environmental targets in the express, parcels and postal sector.

“TNT is pleased to announce today that we aim to improve our CO2 efficiency by 45% by 2020. Withthis ambitious objective, TNT substantiates its global Planet Me programme and underscores itscommitment to minimise its impact on the environment,” said CEO Peter Bakker at the company’spresentation of its 2009 results.

CFO Henk van Dalen said that TNT’s new “CO2 Index” already showed a reduction of 2007 levels to94% in 2009 and the aim was to get to 55% of the 2007 level over the next ten years.

Outlining the group’s approach, van Dalen said there would be separate CO2 KPIs for airtransport (based on CO2 emissions per tonne-km), road transport (emissions per km) and buildings(per square metre) that would each be compared to the 2007 level. These results would beconsolidated into a group-level figure.

Actual CO2 objectives would be translated into measurable actions throughout the organisation, and the group’s CO2 performance would become part of the board’s bonus objectives.

In an announcement, TNT said it sees the objective as a commitment to action – one thatestablishes its company-wide ambition level and underscores its commitment to environmentalefficiency.

To achieve the environmental commitment, TNT will adopt a twofold approach. It will continuouslyimprove CO2 efficiency by implementing best practices such as driver training and networkoptimisation measures. In addition, it pursue innovative operational solutions, such as electricvehicles, inner-city logistics, biofuels and renewable energy.

TNT’s CO2 objective, which exceeds the ambition level of its competitors, was achieved followinga comprehensive analysis and extensive consultation with internal and external experts. This uniqueprocess allowed the company to identify realistic CO2 reduction opportunities tailored to its coreactivities. The CO2 objective provides stakeholders with a credible environmental proposition.

The long-term objective makes business sense given that customers increasingly demand that TNTplays its part in achieving environmental efficiency. CO2 efficient solutions will also lead tocost savings and, therefore, will help to secure TNT’s license to operate.
