FedEx LTL companies hike rates

FedEx Freight

FedEx’s two US road freight trucking companies are hiking prices to try to improve yields in 2010following a heavy price war last year. Other US truckers are also raising prices for this

year.

FedEx Freight and FedEx National LTL will implement 5.9% general rate increases (GRI)effective February 1, 2010. FedEx Freight offers fast-transit LTL services while FedEx National LTLconcentrates on economical LTL services. FedEx Express and FedEx Ground already increased theirprices at the start of January.

The increases apply to interstate and intrastate LTL shipments, as well as shipments betweenthe USA and Canada covered by the FXF 1000 and FXNL 501 Base Rates. Various additional changes willinclude minimum and accessorial charges and some adjustments to fuel surcharges.

UPS Freight already announced in December that it would increase general rates (minimumcharge, LTL rates and accessorial charges) for non-contractual shipments in the United States,Canada and Mexico by an average of 5.7% with effect from January 4.

Major US haulage firm Old Dominion Freight Line (ODFL) announced earlier this month that itwould put up its base rates by 4.4% from today (January 18), which it justified by the need tooffset higher operational and staff costs. Another leading US trucker Con-Way Freight has not yetdisclosed its rates policy for 2010.

Meanwhile, leading trucker YRC successfully staved off insolvency at the start of the yearwith a successful debt-for-equity swap.
