USPS adds mobile services and shipping products

USPS simplifies parcel returns

USPS has launched new services including a new application for iPhones and iPods, shipping withPriority Mail Flat Rates Boxes and improved parcel return options.



In cooperation with Apple Computer’s App Store, USPS now offers a free application for iPhoneand iPod touch mobile digital devices. The USPS Mobile application takes advantage of GlobalPositioning Satellite (GPS) capabilities, using the Locator function to show users Post Offices,Automated Postal Centres and Collection Boxes in closest proximity. It provides maps and directionsto the closest location.

“The Postal Service is America’s largest retailer, with 36,000 Post Offices and retailoutlets in communities across the country. Now the iPhone community has a Post Office as well,”said Robert Bernstock, president, Mailing and Shipping Services.

The new application for iPhone and iPod touch devices follows the latest implementation ofeasy-to-use functionality to mobile phone users. Additional applications for other internet-enabledmobile devices are in development, USPS said in a statement.

Separately, the company has simplified shipping with new Priority Mail Flat Rate Boxes thatvirtually eliminate the need to weigh packages up to 70 lbs (32 kg). They are offered in fourconvenient sizes, with prices starting at $4.95.

“Using Priority Mail Flat Rate Boxes, you can lose the scale and ship for one low rate to anystate,” said Gary Reblin, vice president, Expedited Shipping.

In addition, USPS has launched new return services for merchants, shippers and consumerslooking for reliable, cost-effective solutions for returning holiday gifts.

Merchandise Return Service provides shippers with the flexibility to offer customers packagereturn options using First-Class Mail, Priority Mail, or other services depending on urgency, sizeand cost. “It is a convenient end-to-end returns solution,” Bernstock commented.

Parcel Return Service enables high-volume business mailers to save costs through awork-share discount programme. Shippers choosing either Merchandise Return Service or Parcel ReturnService can simply include a return label with the original order or send it to customers via mailor e-mail.

Consumers returning holiday gifts from friends and family can rely on Click-N-Ship to payfor postage, print shipping labels and request package pickup. Click-N-Ship offers consumers aquick and easy way to return gifts using a desktop computer at home or the office. They alsoreceive an online discount for postage and free Delivery Confirmation service on Priority Mail andExpress Mail packages.

“Our package return services provide a variety of options for consumers and businessmailers,” Bernstock added. “Whatever the service requirement, we have solutions available forreturning merchandise quickly and efficiently.”
