FedEx adds economy service, expanded hub in Mexico

FedEx expands in Mexico

FedEx Express has extended its activities in Mexico with the launch of its International Economyservice and the opening of an expanded hub facility at Guadalajara, the country’s second-largest

city.

As of October 31, FedEx will introduce the lower-priced International Economy service on theMexican market, offering deliveries to 204 destination countries and territories, and FedExInternational Economy Freight deliveries to 83 destination countries and territories. Servicefeatures include transit times of 4-6 days and the FedEx money-back guarantee.

“Businesses around the world are seeking cost-effective alternatives to keep theircompetitive edge and still reach new market opportunities,” said Roby G. Brown, Vice President ofOperations, FedEx Express, Mexico. “Our new economy service will provide more choices and costsavings, all with the same reliability and service that FedEx is known for.” The service will beespecially attractive to the small and medium businesses that make up more than 90% of Mexicanfirms but which account for less than 10% of exports, he added.

Meanwhile, FedEx Express has opened its expanded Bonded Warehouse at GuadalajaraInternational Airport in western Mexico to serve the city and surrounding region.

The expansion has added 3,907 sqm to the original 3,963 sqm, reduced shipment processing timeby up to 40% with a capacity of 4,000 packages per hour, and increased storage capacity by 83%. Theexpanded Guadalajara facility now has a total area of 7,870 sqm, which includes 3,866 sqm ofwarehouse space, a manoeuvring area of 2,291 sqm for loading and unloading vehicles and containersand, 10 new truck docks to enable safe load and unload operations.

The additional space for package examination by customs brokers improves the efficiency ofthe customs clearance process and speeds availability of urgent shipments tocustomers. State-of-the-art technology also speeds processing, with same-day delivery ofinbound shipments and faster outbound freight delivery. FedEx is the only express carrier thathas been authorised by the relevant authorities to operate a bonded warehouse in Guadalajara.

“We have added a larger processing capacity and faster customer clearance process to ourbonded warehouse in Jalisco to allow us to further strengthen our Mexico operations and offer ourcustomers better control over their own international commerce operations,” said Juan N. Cento,president of FedEx Express, Latin America and Caribbean Division. 

FedEx Express has expanded its operations in Mexico significantly in recent years with thelaunch of domestic express services and creation of a domestic air network. The company now hasnearly 1,200 employees, a ground fleet of 243 vehicles and operates 19 stations, 33 World ServiceCenters and has 236 authorised Delivery Centers across the country.

It operates five weekly A310 flights and a weekly MD10 service to Monterrey (northernMexico), and six weekly MD10 flights to the two hubs at Toluca (central Mexico) and Guadalajara.There are also five weekly Convair 580 services to the southern cities of Cancun and Merida.
