Another week of strikes at Royal Mail

Royal Mail

Mail and parcel deliveries in Britain will again be hit this week by continuing strikes at RoyalMail amid deadlock over cost-cutting and modernisation plans.

The postal workers union CWU announced that up to 20,000 postal workers will take part innumerous one-day stoppages spread through the week at delivery offices and regional distributioncentres across the country. It would be the biggest week of stoppages so far in the currentdispute, it said.

The union repeated its claim that Royal Mail is not interested in “meaningful” negotiationsover plans for cost-cutting measures and modernisation plans, and confirmed it will go ahead withplans for a national strike ballot in September.

“We will call off all strike action in return for meaningful negotiations on modernisation, pay and job security. As the recognised union this is the least Royal Mail should do,” said CWUdeputy general secretary Dave Ward. “Our members do not want to lose money or disrupt services bytaking further strike action. However, while Royal Mail refuses to acknowledge the serious issuesfacing its own employees we feel there is no alternative but to press ahead with a national strikeballot.”

The ongoing strike action is part of the latest industrial dispute between Royal Mail and theCWU which is causing major disruption to mail deliveries in Britain. The CWU called the strikesafter Royal Mail turned down an offer for a three-month no strike deal.
