GLS France increases capacity at its regional hubs in Paris and Lyon

GLS France has expanded the capacity of two major hubs with new equipment to boost productivity andimprove service quality for customers.

At its major hub in Fleury, located in the greater Paris area, GLS has invested in anexpanded sorting chain this year to keep up with rising parcel volumes and maintain the qualitylevel. Currently, about 80,000 parcels a day are handled at the site.

The facility now has 34 exit doors equipped with telescopic holders making individualhandling of parcels possible. To optimise the handling of “small parcels” weighing less than 2 kg,the depot was equipped with a special sorting chain considerably improving the sorting performanceand ensuring these specific shipments remain undamaged.

A second sorting chain was installed this month in the lower part of the facility allowingthe manual handling of so-called “untransportable” parcels. The chain is thus set up on two levelsenabling GLS to increase cargo safety and to automate the handling of shipments differing from thenorm such as tyres and tubes.

Thanks to these technological investments, the sorting capacity of the facility now amountsto 13,000 parcels per hour compared to 8,000 previously.

As part of re-organising its network in the south-east, GLS France has also implementedmodular conveyors at its depot in Lyon that, similar to Fleury, functions as a regional hub.

This new conveyor is equipped with 18 telescopic holders allowing loading and unloading ofparcels directly on the sorting line. This new structure has boosted the sorting capacity at thesite to 7,500 parcels per hour. In addition, the new processes improve the working conditions andenhance productivity of the drivers when preparing their tours. It allows saving time on deliveryroutes while also contributing to faster distribution to the recipient, GLS France said in astatement.
