DHL plans to create 110 new jobs at its air cargo hub in Leipzig in the customs division in thenext 12 months.
The future employees will be in charge of handling shipments according to fiscal and customslaw prescriptions. These activities have been carried out in Cologne and Frankfurt until now.“Since the European air hub is located in Leipzig, these duties should be concentrated here aswell,” Manfred Hauschild, DHL Leipzig spokesman, told the Leipziger Volkszeitung newspaper.
Although employees at other sites have been offered new jobs in Leipzig, it is stilluncertain whether they will accept the offers. “We assume that a high percentage rate of employeescan be hired through people from the region,” he explained. Most of the jobs offered are part-timejobs with shift-work including night shifts and weekend work.
Currently, DHL handles 1,000 tons of freight daily at the Leipzig hub compared to 1,500 tonslast year. “But we still operate more than 50 flights daily,” Hauschild stressed. Capacity has beenreduced by using smaller machines in some cases, he added.
Today, about 2,300 DHL employees work at the airport. Since freight volumes have declined dueto the financial crisis, the working hours have been reduced as well, the DHL spokesman said. However, DHL remains optimistic about a turnaround. “We will reach the bottom soon,” Hauschildconcluded without mentioning a concrete point in time.
At any rate, the company expects to further increase the number of employees at the airportto an estimated 3,500 in the coming years, German media reported.
