More than 800 jobs are being cut at various DHL Express companies and offices in Europe as theoperator seeks to cut costs by €460 million this year and downscale operations to match lower
demand. New jobs are being created at the Leipzig air hub, however.About 320 jobs will go in Ireland where staff yesterday voted overwhelmingly to acceptredundancy packages. Some may continue to work for the firm on a self-employed basis, however. DHLExpress is effectively shutting down its domestic express business in the country and will focus oninternational express to and from Ireland in future.
Up to 250 posts are expected to be shed at the European regional head office in Brussels overthe coming months, and a further 80-90 positions may disappear at the global Express head office inBonn, German media reported. This was confirmed by company spokespersons.
In addition, 180 employees of airline subsidiary European Air Transport (EAT) at BrusselsAirport will lose their jobs as the remaining airline operation is transferred to the new Europeanhub at Leipzig/Halle airport.
More positively, however, up to 170 new jobs could be created at Leipzig/Halle Airport and afurther 160 jobs in the aviation network. DHL has offered 130 Belgian-based ground andadministrative staff a move to Leipzig while about 40 local non-cockpit jobs will be created withthe operational launch of AeroLogic, the airline joint venture with Lufthansa Cargo.
In addition, Aerologic will take on about 160 pilots this year and next year to operate itsfleet of eight B777 freighters. They will be based at various airports within DHL’s global aviationnetwork.
