GLS has announced the expansion of its Rotterdam depot in the Netherlands, increasing operationalefficiency and warehouse capacities.
Shipment handling capacity at the expanded Rotterdam depot will be tripled to 16,000 parcelsdaily. The company has invested more than €6 million in the acquisition of the formerly rentedbuilding at the industrial area “Spaanse Polder” in April 2009. A total of 110 employees anddrivers will ensure parcel and freight delivery to the area of Rotterdam, Randstad and Den Haag.
The depot has been expanded by 10,000 sqm additional space for extension of the parcel andfreight handling area as well as for storage space in a new warehouse.
“The location of the depot is perfect – close to the motorway A20,” explained Milo Kars,General Manager GLS Netherlands. “Through the expansion at the Rotterdam depot, we are now able toprovide complete outsourcing solutions in addition to parcel and freight handling.”
The three GLS warehouses at Breukelen, Vianen and Rotterdam have a total of 30,000 sqmproviding space for 35,000 pallets.
Kars said that one of the main reasons for the expansion was to increase warehouse capacitiesfor logistics outsourcing of customers in times of the economic crisis. “Outsourcing of logisticscan help companies to survive the crisis,” he explained, “not only due to the reduced costs andincreased flexibility, but also due to the high quality and know-how which logistics specialistscan provide.”
GLS offers complete handling of containers to its customers for goods arriving at the port ofRotterdam. In addition to customs clearance, the company also provides unloading and palletizingservices. Companies with a large network have the possibility to open an internal web shop at GLS,enabling the employees to directly forward orders, for example for office equipment or othercompany specific material, to GLS.
GLS Netherlands operates 14 depots for parcel handling as well as five freight depotsthroughout the country.
