German carrier Night Star Express (NSE) has won a major contract for the spare part logistics ofleading automobile manufacturer BMW in southern Germany.
The new contract incorporates a shipping volume of 50 tonnes a day from the main factory ofBMW Group in Dingolfing (north-east of Munich), which serves as the main distribution centre fororiginal parts to all BMW trade organisations worldwide, to some 214 BMW retailers in southernGermany. NSE has been operating a customised overnight trucking distribution network for thecontract since March 2, 2009.
A total of 12 jumbo trucks drive every day from the BMW factory at Dingolfing to the NSEbranches in Augsburg, Neu-Ulm, Eltmann and Regenstauf. From there the carrier uses 38 smallertrucks exclusively for night express delivery of the BMW parts to retailers. Moreover, a special7.5 tonne truck shuttles between two BMW factories, while a special trailer truck is used fordelivery to BMW wholesalers in the Munich area.
In addition to the night delivery, another delivery service is provided during the daybetween 12.45 pm and 4.40 pm to a selected number of 70 BMW traders located within a radius of 200km around the main factory at Dingolfing.
“After one month of cooperation, BMW is a night express customer like any other. The onlydifference is the enormous volume of BMW,” said Heiner Matthias Honold, owner of Night ExpressHonold GmbH. The close partnership with BMW during the preparatory period enabled a smooth start,and the customised measures in areas such as IT, fleet and additional staff had already paid offcompletely, he added. “Both sides’ expectations have been completely met. Night Star Express hasproved convincing thanks to its clear customer focus.”
