FedEx expands in Mexico

FedEx Express has this week expanded its international and domestic capacity in Mexico with thedoubling of its existing facility at Guadalajara and the opening of a new domestic hub at San Luis

Potosí.

FedEx is currently expanding its air cargo terminal and bonded warehouse facility at MiguelHidalgo y Costilla International Airport in Guadalajara, Jalisco, which serves as a principalcentre of operations for its international and domestic shipments in Mexico. In addition, it hasopened a new hub in San Luis Potosí, to support FedEx Express Nacional, the company’s domesticexpress service launched in October 2008.

The Guadalajara expansion adds 3,866 sqm of warehouse space to the facility that now has atotal area of 7,829 sqm. It also provides increased access for the entry and exit of trucks andgeneral service equipment. Ten new truck docks will be built to enable safe load and unloadoperations. The manoeuvring area will be extended to 2,291 sqm thus providing sufficient space toreceive and load/unload vehicles and containers.

The FedEx Guadalajara Gateway serves 10 of the 32 Mexican states, and handles significantimport and export volumes estimated at more than 90,718 kilograms on a daily basis. A mechanisedsort belt will optimise the warehouse space and expedite package sorting, with a processingcapacity of 4,000 packages per hour. With the expanded facility, FedEx will be able to process theequivalent of more than 136,078 kilograms daily.

The newly-opened FedEx hub in San Luis Potosí covers more than 2,000 sqm and has the capacityto process 6,000 shipments per hour. It is located in a major commercial and industrial center thatlies in an economically-advantageous area at the heart of Mexico’s “Golden Triangle,” making it anideal geographic location for a FedEx domestic service distribution centre hub. FedEx expects thesorting capacity and the number of employees to increase during the next few years to meet thegrowing demand for world-class express shipping across Mexico.

The new San Luis Potosí facility is 100% automated and leverages leading-edge technology thatallows for faster operation and accuracy. To increase package processing speed, the new facilitywill operate state-of-the-art conveyor and sorting systems, featuring 18 truck docks with hydraulicplatforms, 51 sqm of automated roller bed system and nearly 21 sqm of gravity roller bed forpackage sorting. The new hub will also support real-time package tracking technology.

FedEx Express Nacional covers all 32 Mexican states with the support of two operationalcentres: in Toluca (Multiplex) and the new San Luis Potosí facility.
