Deutsche Post World Net has launched a new environmental initiative by using renewable energy tocover nearly 100% of its demand for electricity in Germany with effect from January this year as
part of its environmental programme GoGreen. For a year now, Deutsche Post World Net has been getting about two-thirds of its electricityin Germany from regional energy providers who use renewable sources. This share will now beincreased to 100% under the framework agreements signed a year ago.
With this move, Deutsche Post expects to reduce CO2 emissions by around 400,000 tons a year, which equals annual per-capita emissions of a city with more than 30,000 residents. Greenelectricity has already been used at the group’s headquarters in Bonn since the beginning of 2008.
The new electricity contracts apply for each of the 115 mail and parcel centers as well asall the other properties such as logistics and administrative sites throughout the country.
“As the world’s leading logistics group, we also want to play a leading role in climateprotection,” said Dr. Winfried Häser, Director for Environmental Strategy and Policy at DeutschePost World Net. “The switch to green electricity in Germany makes a significant contributiontowards reaching our climate protection goals.”
DPWN added that the decision to use green electricity represented the biggest step taken todate to reduce CO2 emissions in the company’s real-estate property saying that real estate was oneof the areas with broad potential to save energy and counteract climate change.
As part of GoGreen, the Group is working to improve the measurement of carbon-dioxideemissions in order to identify other ways of saving energy and preventing CO2 emissions. Inaddition to green electricity, efficient lighting systems are being used in existing buildingswhile heating and air-conditioning systems are being optimised. In new buildings, the company willdraw on architectural and technical innovations designed for more efficient use of energy.
